What is AAVIS ?
The Australian Association of Vaginal and Incontinence Surgeons (AAVIS)
began life as a small group of general gynaecologists who were inspired by the
work of Peter Petros to begin using tapes and slings
to treat urinary incontinence in 1996. Since then AAVIS has grown to become a
truly multidisciplinary pelvic floor society with over 250 members in
The first tension free vaginal sling procedure was performed by Professor Peter Petros in 1986. Between 1990-1993 Petros collaborated with the late Professor Ulf Ulmsten. Together they developed the Integral Theory which was published in 1990 and 1993. Subsequently these two pioneers developed the Intravaginal Slingplasty procedure. In 1995 Ulmsten developed the TVT and now there are over 30 slings on the market for the treatment of incontinence. Sub urethral slings are now the gold standard treatment for incontinence surgery. AAVIS now includes gynaecologists, urologists and colorectal surgeons and other specialties with an interest in the management of prolapse and incontinence.
AAVIS advocates a holistic approach to the treatment of pelvic problems with an emphasis on the conservation of tissues and preservation of function. We support the responsible use of prostheses in pelvic surgery and encourages research in this area. AAVIS provides training and accreditation of surgeons in new techniques of pelvic surgery using prostheses as well as providing a forum for exchange of ideas and comparison of outcomes across disciplines.
