Main scientific questions treated

1) Epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Development of present treatment of Ulcerative Colitis, based on derivatives of Salazopirine. First demonstration in international arena of the greater efficaciousness of 5-aminosalicylic acid for topical use versus hydrocortisone. As regards Crohn's Disease, determination of a prognostic index for inflammatory relapses, anticipating the onset of clinical symptoms and morphologically evident alterations of the disease. Identification of the incidence of Ulcerative Colitis at regional level.

2) Study of motor phenomena of the ano-rectal area and their clinical implicatons. Identification of new technical procedures for ano-rectal-colic functional exploration, especially methodology for ano-rectal manometric study for diagnosing Hirschsprung's Disease, obtaining excellent diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of the technique, even in neonatal age.

3) Study of constipation and diarrhea. Identification of certain clinical findings in Irritable Bowel Syndrome such as atonic constipation or Slow Transit Constipation. This work has been cited and has been reported in basic text books the foremost of which is "Gastrointestinal Disease" by Sleisenger-Fordtran in its 1989 edition.

4) Perfecting methods of manometric and myoelectric study of the colon. Design of a programme for computerized analysis of myoelectric signals and pressures of the digestive canal. Production of a new technique for simultaneously studying motor activity and movement of endoluminal contents in the whole colon by use of combined manometric and scintigraphic methods.

5) Physiology of motility of the ovarian tube and human uterus. Development of an original approach for studying the contractile activity "in vivo" of the tubes in women with unexplained infertility. Recording of electric activity of human uterus kept alive for a long time after surgical removal for neoplastic disease by a system of extracorporeal circulation.

6) Relationship between illness behavior, eating disorders and functional intestinal disorders. Demonstration that patients with non-organic constipation show more different patterns in the illness behavior than affective disturbances. The prevalence of women with undisclosed bulimia nervosa in very high in patients seeking treatment for constipation and/or abdominal bloating.
