Professor Baumgartner studied medicine at the University of
Freiburg in Germany completing his Doctural thesis in 1984. He undertook a Postdoctoral fellowship in the
USA at the University of California, San Diego and VA-Hospital, La Jolla, San
Diego. Upon his return he was appointed as a resident in the Department of
Internal Medicine in Freiburg.
He started his career in Surgery in 1987 in
the department of General Surgery of the University of Freiburg and completed
his training in 1993 with a special interest in Colorectal.
In 2003 he became a Professor of Surgery in
recognition of his research and in 2004 was appointed as Head of the Department
of General and Colorectal Surgery in Ottobeuren Germany.
